In UC Irvine’s Certificate Program for e-Learning and Instructional Design, I learned that the time spent researching and planning prior to developing a training is a crucial part of developing an effective training and requires a significant portion of development time. Sometimes developing a training is not the solution to a performance issue and there may be other underlying factors. Developing an evaluation plan helps determine whether a training is yielding the intended results and supporting the outcomes and goals that an organization requires from the training. To develop this evaluation plan, I followed the Kirkpatrick Model of Evaluation which measures the training’s organizational impact, behavioral impact, impact on acquisition of knowledge, and reaction to training. I worked on a fictional scenario inspired by the work that I do in my current position at Sonoma Connect | Sonoma Unidos. This class taught me a lot about the ways that research and evaluation inform design and how it can make the experience more effective and enjoyable for everyone involved in a training process.
